About the Royal Commission

The Royal Commission is a significant government initiative aimed at investigating and addressing the pressing issues faced by our veterans. It seeks to identify the gaps in the current mental health care system, especially for those who served post September 11, 2001.

Swiss 8 stands at the forefront of this movement, advocating for comprehensive and proactive mental health solutions that truly put our veterans first.

Challenges in the Current
Veteran Mental Health Model

Reactive Approach

Reactive Approach

The current veteran mental health model is often reactive, waiting for veterans to seek help after facing mental health issues, leading to delays in support and treatment.
Limited Support during Transition

Limited Support during Transition

Veterans face a challenging transition into civilian life, with limited support systems and guidance, contributing to feelings of isolation and disconnection.
Inadequate Government Funding

Inadequate Government Funding

Many effective grassroots organizations struggle to secure sufficient government funding, limiting their ability to make a significant impact.
Lack of Collaboration

Lack of Collaboration

The absence of effective collaboration between government, Ex-Service Organizations (ESOs), and grassroots organizations hinders the development and implementation of comprehensive solutions.

There is a toxic leadership culture spilling out of defence and into veteran wellbeing. A culture where senior military leaders prioritise personal gain and post nominals over young veteran wellbeing. This culture must be fixed. The swamp of retired generals using DVA budgets as a retirement fund must be drained. We must put the veteran at the centre of all discussion and intervention building. Veteran lives must come first.

Our Mission
And Challenges

At Swiss 8, we are driven by our mission to provide proactive mental health care and life optimization tools to veterans. Our journey has not been without challenges. We've faced setbacks in securing government funding, encountered appropriation of ideas, and observed a lack of support for innovative interventions.

But we don't back down – we believe our veterans deserve the best possible care and support.

Swiss 8 has created the Recalibr8 HQ Community to collaborate with like-minded organisations, engage in discussions and share valuable resources and updates.  Show your support by joining our coaches in HQ and getting involved.

Our Recommendations

  • The Royal Commission should acknowledge the toxic culture present within the government, big consulting firms, and large ESOs. A financial support model should be established to assist grassroots organisations that do most of the work in the veteran mental health space. This model must be separate from lobbyist organisations and political manoeuvring.

  • All decision-making processes should prioritise the needs and well-being of veterans.

  • Research and interventions must focus on the high-risk demographic of young, hyper-masculine veterans. Organisations that have the trust and engagement of this demographic should be involved in the research and development process.

  • Taxpayer dollars allocated to this space should be subject to accountability measures. Organisations that do not show improvements in mental health markers or reduced suicidality rates should not receive further funding for the same concepts.

We firmly believe in putting veterans first in all decision-making processes. Our recommendations include creating a financial model to support grassroots organizations, focusing on the needs of hyper-masculine young veterans, and implementing accountability measures for tax-funded initiatives. By joining Recalibr8 HQ, you can actively contribute to these discussions and help shape a brighter future for our veterans.
